History of Apartment Selector: Started in 1959, by Cecil Laughlin, Jr. in 1959, the APartment Selector Service, as an orginial. Since the urban apartment market was unique to the sunbelt, apartment locator was also unique.The uniqueness centered on the fact that renters were offered a free service in exchange for their following the recommendation of the locator. The only cost was and is the renters commitment. Unlike the Northeast and West coast, where the renter paid a fee to a real estate agent, the free locator concept was an instant success. During the early 1960's Apartment Selector was operated by Helen and Cecil Laughlin. In 1967, Cecil Laughlin, Jr. passed away leaving the company to Helen. Helen married Keith Beers and operated the company during the 1970's. In May 1979, Kendall Laughlin, the current owner, puchased the Apartment Seletor system from the Beers. During the 1980's and 1990's the business changed as the real estate industry changed. For example, in 1985 there were 29 locations and over 150 agents. By 1995, the services were offered in fewer locations with the start of the internet taking over the marketing and distribution. By 2005, the internet was fully used to manage prospects, make prospect presentations, market to prospects and in general operated as the backbone of the business. The company uses software designed by locators for the locators and prospects. As of 2008, agents work prospects down the street and across the country. One agent lives in Greenbay WI and works prospects in Atlanta GA. Structure: - Family Owned - Since 1959, the Laughlin family has been serving renters and helping people find great apartments. Cecil Laughlin started the business in the Dallas area. - Franchised - In 1988 Apartment Selector introduced its franchising program. Local ownership has allowed the company to grow and serve clients with agents working in over 10 states. - Trained Leasing specialists - Offering personal service to our clients is great fun and gives a rewarding experience to the agent.
